Numbers 31: The LORD said to Moses,
“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”

So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD’s vengeance on them.

Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.”

So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.

Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.

Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba–the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.

They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.

They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,

and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. [1]

Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.

Moses was angry with the officers of the army–the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds–who returned from the battle.

“Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them.

However, the two are currently entangled in a court battle over copyright infringement. Sam claims that he should have been partly paid by Nyashinsky after he signed a deal with Tecno Mobile as a brand ambassador, since the song ‘Wach Wach’ was used in the commercials.

In layman language, publishing means if the song is used in an advert, a movie soundtrack or a game, the money earned from that has to be shared equally between Sam and Nyashinsky.

In more layman language, the master rights means the song is fully owned by Nyashinsky. This is mainly the rights owned by those who fund the production of the music.

If the ‘Kudade’ gang have signed the split sheet, they have less to worry about. But if they didn’t, they will be in for trouble, unless they sign a different agreement before it’s too late.

As an artist, never leave that studio without signing the SPLIT SHEET….’IRREGARDLESS’ of how good you feel about the song.

Absolutely not! This has been a discussion all week and I am here to just give a summary. Here are my pointers:

Facilitation: Established media houses have production budgets. This covers the production cost of doing particular shows. If you are being interviewed during unsociable hours like early mornings or late nights, the media can facilitate your travel and meal arrangements. These things are discussed way before the interview dates and times are agreed upon. That’s okay. Not all shows have budgets though.

Where the media must pay you: If the media house has an audience which has paid entrance fees to be in the show, it means they are directly making moneyn. That’s why you need management to find out all these things beforehand. For instance, if people wanted to charge Churchill for interviewing them at the Carnivore, they would have easily done that. The show was charging the audience gate
fees. Unless you can prove that the audience has been charged to attend your live interview, then you can’t charge the media house for an interview. They can only facilitate your presence, and this is all planned in advance.

The media does not necessarily need you: If you thought because you have millions of views and followers the media house will shut down because they haven’t interviewed you, think again.

Technology has changed the game, yes. Most media houses have both traditional and new methods of dealing with the changes, no one is completely stuck in the past, even the good old KBC.

A lot of people do things online, but there are others who are still consuming media in traditional platforms, even in the West.

New tech changes comes with risks too. You can lose your millions of views in just a click of a button and go back to ground zero. You will need the media to perhaps help you buildup again. Oh but you charged them for interviews…are you willing to pay for help?

And if you don’t show up for the interview because you want to be paid, the media will look for someone else to interview. Trust me, they can push South Sudanese music into the Kenyan market easily.

Most corporate bodies watch very closely which musicians are becoming a PR headache and they stay away from them.

Ask Nameless, he once worked at Scan Group and learnt one or two things about PR. That’s why he is still relevant over 20 years later.

Don’t make ‘stupid’ mistakes.

It’s a new year, time to strategize. There’s loads of great music in Kenya ready to compete in the international market.

There’s no music success ‘Bible’ out there. You create your own path, or learn from others.

As a music and entertainment journalist, below are just a few of the pointers I have been talking about that artists can learn from:

INVESTMENT: Music is a business. You need to invest in it. Put in money and time, and anything else.

MANAGEMENT: You will not go international without management. PR, Wardrobe and Road managers are part of your team. They are your employees and they need to earn from what they bring on the table. If they can’t help you be a better musician, then fire them and hire new and competent ones.

SOCIAL MEDIA: Your social media influence is one of your keys to the world. It’s okay to be a product influencer at home. It pays the bills, but don’t forget what got you there. Most international acts pay attention to what your social media and streaming numbers look like.

BROTHER’S KEEPER: Your fellow musician is not your enemy. Competition is key, but animosity will not take you anywhere. If you have capabilities to uplift your fellow musician by sharing contacts of media or other bigger artists for collaborations, don’t hesitate to give them. When they win, you win. You will not sing forever, but that kind gesture will outlive you.

RISKS: Just like in business, it’s important to take risks in music. Staying in Nairobi after releasing a hit song is not enough. Travel, create that media tour in London, New York, Lagos, or wherever else you feel you need to promote your music. Reach out for bigger collabos. Davido, Burnaboy or Diamond Platnumz are not gods. They can be reached. Use your contacts to reach them. There are many Kenyans in various influential places out there in the world. If you don’t reach out to them, they won’t come looking for you.

According to Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, representatives of the Limuru III Conference have decided to assemble a legal team to represent the victims of Friday’s shooting in Thika.

The shooting took place in Thika, Kiambu County, amid a conflict between competing parties on the same day as the Limuru III Conference.

According to Kioni, the crew visited families who had lost loved ones in the shooting to offer their condolences. He remarked that in order to protect their people’s rights, they are assembling a legal team.

“We said that we will assemble attorneys from our Limuru III who will always be available to defend our people because quite some atrocity has been occasioned on the poor,” Kioni stated in a K24 interview on Monday.

“Those who are accountable will be held accountable by us. Because the individuals Kenyans voted for perpetrated that horrible act on their behalf.”

According to Kioni, a 26-year-old Nyandarua man who was shot is presently in critical condition.

He worked with other producers too, including another producer extraordinaire, Polycarp ‘Fancy Fingers’ Otieno, a fellow band member, who brings in his expertise in the EP.

Song writing is also great. Savara has involved several song writers like Victor Gitema, Benson Muia, Eugine Ywaya, among others. A good musician always involves other song writers in their projects, and they have done a good job on this one.

What about Savara as a vocalist? I will say something that even those close to him might be hesitant to say it: Savara will thrive better in collabos, he appears a bit weak on his own.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Mr Lenny , as great a vocalist as he is, does better in collabos than solo songs. The same as Fathermoh. In Nigeria, Buju (can’t call him BXBN), thrives in collabos, more than solo projects.

It’s easier to rule Bien’s album, ‘Alusa Why Are You Topless?’ as a SautiSol album. Bien has always been the dominant voice of SautiSol, and the rest have to work really hard to stand out on their own.

All said, Savara has released his EP on time for his Madaraka Fest tour in the US, which will kick off later this month. Fans can familiarize themselves with the music before he hits the stage.
