After the government drastically cut their salary, early childhood development and education (ECDE) teachers are incensed.
Teachers and county administrators alerted the government of low morale among ECDE Teachers while opposing the salary cut.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) ordered county governments to cut the minimum compensation for ECDE teachers from above Ksh 20,000 in some counties to Ksh 7,836.
According to a statement from the Kenya County Governments Union (KCGWU), “This amounts to a Ksh13,000 cut, which is considerable for the already inadequately compensated ECDE Teachers.”
As a result, the Kenya County Governments Union (KCGWU) threatened to sue over allegations that they were not contacted and did not participate.
As you are aware, this union represents early childhood development and education (ECDE) teachers on labor-related issues. According to KCGWU Secretary General Roba Duba, the union was never consulted when the grading and salary systems were developed, which is completely against the law.
Duba claimed that SRC intended to further impoverish Kenyan teachers, who are already suffering greatly from the effects of the economic crisis.
Following a request from the Council of Governors, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reviewed salaries.
In response to the request, SRC instructed Governors to pay the lowest-ranking ECDE instructors Ksh7,836 while Senior ECDE Teacher I (Diploma), who should earn a salary of Ksh15,224 at the very least, and Ksh19,090 at the very most.
Duba added that Vihiga, Homa Bay, Kisii, and West Pokot had already taken action to put the SRC’s recommendations into practice.
Based on the findings of the job appraisal, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) created a new wage structure.
The commission had consultation meetings with key stakeholders before formulating its recommendations, according to Anne Gitai, CEO of SRC.
“Rescind the stated circular and ensure that all stakeholders are brought on board and that the procedure is satisfactory and transparent to ensure that the rights of the ECDE teachers are fully protected as required by law,” noted KCGWU Secretary General Roba Duba.
