The 21-year-old was detained in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault after a woman made complaints online.
Greenwood was immediately suspended by Man United after being detained and later arrested on allegations of sexual assault and making threats to kill.
However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges against the forward, according to a statement from Greater Manchester Police that was released on Thursday. This decision “had not been made lightly,” the statement read.
The GMP’s Head of Public Protection, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, issued the following statement: “Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been detained and charged in connection with an investigation launched in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this.”
“The investigation team has maintained continuous contact with the legal team, offering any noteworthy changes. As a result, they are aware of the reasons for the decision to halt the case at this point and that it was not made lightly. Despite the interest in this matter from the media and the general public, we have opted not to elaborate further.
“However, I would like to use this chance to reaffirm GMP’s dedication to looking into claims of violence against women and girls and providing those impacted with support, regardless of their circumstances, during what can be a trying and difficult period for them.
“An ever-increasing number of officers are obtaining specialized training, and the force is using the resources provided by the criminal justice system more frequently to protect the public and assist victims. Please don’t let this instance discourage you from seeking assistance if you believe you are or might be a victim.
The CPS stated that there was “no longer a realistic possibility of conviction” due to the “withdrawal of key witnesses” and the “discovery of fresh material” in their own statement.
We have a responsibility to keep cases under constant evaluation, a spokeswoman added. There was no longer a chance of conviction in this case due to the withdrawal of important witnesses and newly discovered evidence. We have a responsibility to end the lawsuit given these facts.
“We have given all parties an explanation of our choice. Any prospective victims are always welcome to come forward and contact the police, and we will file charges wherever the legal requirements are met.
Greenwood’s sponsorship agreement with Nike was canceled after his initial arrest, and EA Sports also kicked him out of FIFA 22.
Since graduating from Manchester United’s junior academy, the 21-year-old has made 129 appearances for the team, scoring 35 goals and dishing out 12 assists.
