The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is pleading with the general public to refrain from making assumptions about the circumstances surrounding one of their employees who was shot on Monday in the Central Business District.
Police suspect Lilian Waithera, 46, was shot by an unidentified gunman when she slumped and passed away on a Nairobi street on Monday evening.
She died mysteriously, according to social media posts, according to a statement released by NHIF on Wednesday.
The statement said, in part, “NHIF wishes to advise the public to avoid speculation and to allow relevant investigation authorities to conclusively resolve the case surrounding her untimely demise.”
Additionally, it denied rumors that Mr. Geofrey Mwangi served as its CEO. This is in response to a social media story that said he was the CEO of the NHIF.
The deceased was employed by the Operations Department’s Registration and Compliance, according to the Fund.
The late Waithera was with her coworker Damaris Achieng, who said that after work they had walked from their Upper Hill offices to the Nairobi CBD.
When she arrived at Kaunda Street, one of her coworkers suddenly experienced a severe chest problem and asked her to call an ambulance so that it could transport her to Nairobi Hospital.
Her body was taken to the Kenyatta University Mortuary by her family on Tuesday, when a post-mortem revealed that she had been shot; a bullet had been discovered lodged in her lungs.
Adamson Bungei, the head of the Nairobi police, said that the incident is being looked into.
Police had earlier stated in a statement that the bullet “entered through the collar bone, having been shot from an upward angle.”
Mr. Bungei reiterated this when speaking with Nation on the phone on Wednesday.

Mr. Bungei claimed that someone on top of one of the buildings fired the gunshot that struck the 46-year-old woman.
According to Bungei, the ballistic experts are working on the case and trying to figure out who fired the gun, where it came from, and why.
The police have since received the bullet head for a ballistic analysis.
Initial reports claimed that she had collapsed, but he added that they were still looking into the matter of the gunshot.
Police have opened a file and given the case to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives for additional research.
At Central Police Station, the event was reported with OB number 187/13/2023.
