From his last post, it’s evident that our esteemed Cheruiyot AK did not plan on returning. A close examination of his words reveals a man on a mission, where his return was as uncertain as his reaching the summit. He disclosed that he had invested everything into this venture, and he faced the prospect of bankruptcy upon his return to Kenya if he succeeded—a realization he came to during his final preparations.
He was acutely aware of the slim odds of summiting without supplemental oxygen and shared statistics about the dangers. According to his figures, only 3% of Everest climbers have reached the top without supplemental oxygen, and three-quarters of those were seasoned mountaineers who had thoroughly prepared for the challenge.
In his poignant statement, “…I send my body and spirit up there, but I will sit here and rest with you…”, one can interpret the immense risks involved. His final communication with his guide, Nawang Sherpa, indicated that he was overwhelmed but refused assistance or to turn back. His behavior became erratic and wild, suggesting that this may be where he and his guide, who remains missing, parted ways.
Cheruiyot AK was a man of remarkable courage and determination. His unyielding spirit and passion for adventure serve as an inspiration to us all. He pursued his dreams with a fervor that few possess, and his legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who knew him and those who followed his incredible journey.
May his soul rest in eternal peace. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. The world has lost a truly great man. 💔 🇰🇪😔
