The Ministry of Education on behalf of the government posted 3,000 job openings for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers.
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, made the declaration on Friday, May 15, 2023, in front of TVET managers and principals.
The government had authorized a new recruiting drive, according to Machogu, who also stated that there was a trainer deficit in TVET colleges.
“There are currently 6,201 trainers working at TVET colleges, which indicates an 8,817 trainer shortage.
The CS disclosed a severe shortage of trainers, saying “This means that we are unable to reach the recommended trainer-to-trainee ratio of 1:30 for business courses and 1:20 for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses.”
Machogu stated, “I have been interacting with the National Treasury, which has now approved a phased recruitment of 3,000 extra trainers, commencing in April of this year,” in reference to how to remedy the shortage.
How to apply
The government has already given the Public Service Commission (PSC) the go-ahead to begin the hiring process, according to the Education CS.
I have already asked the Public Service Commission (PSC) to start the hiring process, he said.
Those who are interested in employment should submit an online application using the PSC portal.
Click www(dot)pscims(dot)publicservice(dot)go(dot)ke/jobs/ or www(dot)psckjobs(dot)go(dot)ke to access the application portal.
Machogu further stated that the Ministry will keep hiring TVET instructors as needed.
As openings result from attrition, “I have requested the PSC to devise methods to enable the recruitment of trainers on a rolling basis,” he declared.
The CS indicated that by doing this, it would be possible to guarantee that trainers be hired based on the available budget without first obtaining Treasury’s consent.
