As part of continuous community engagement initiatives to bring peace back to the area, the service said it will keep bolstering patrols and intelligence-led operations.

The NPS continued, “The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to continuing the disarmament exercise through peaceful means and community engagement, while enhancing patrols and strategic operations to ensure lasting peace and security in Kerio Valley.”

The program comes after a 2025 exercise in which 340 illicit firearms were voluntarily turned in.

Increased collaboration between citizens and law enforcement, according to authorities, is essential to preserving peace and stability.

The effort has encountered difficulties over the years, including as the politicization of disarmament, the illegal market for firearms, a lack of knowledge about the advantages of development, and problems with cross-border administration.

According to officials, the latest transfer of illicit firearms indicates that these obstacles are now progressively eroding.

The NPS continues to encourage residents to report illegal firearms or suspicious activity through nearby police stations, toll-free hotlines 999, 911, 112, or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.

In the last week, at least 11 illegal firearms have been handed over to security authorities in Tana River County, following a 60-day amnesty aimed at restoring peace in areas affected by inter-community clashes.

On January 12, the Coast regional security team directed the Orma and Degodia communities to surrender illegal guns in their possession after a conflict over pasture and water in late 2025 left at least 14 people dead.

The Orma community has turned in six firearms thus far, compared to five from the Degodia group.

After receiving two further firearms from the Orma village at the Bangali police station, Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Kipkorir praised the elders from both communities for their support of the disarming effort.

The Orma community has turned in two guns to us. We thank the elders for ensuring their people comply with the 60-day directive,” Kipkorir said.

He urged the communities to take full advantage of the amnesty, warning that the government would consider force if all guns were not surrendered by the deadline.

“This is a good beginning. We want all illegal guns handed over to avoid forced disarmament after the amnesty expires,” he added.

Kipkorir urged citizens to rely on government protection instead of obtaining weapons illegally, attributing the influx of illegal firearms to the county’s large size and porous borders.
